Stay active - your life depends on it!

When it is cold and wet outside, or too hot and humid, many of us tend to stay indoors by the heater or air conditioner. And that’s fine for a time, but if you don’t start creating some good habits and get outdoors on a regular basis, don’t be surprised if you start to notice a decline in your health.

That’s right. Not only is it fun to get outside and be active, it is also good for your health as many studies have shown. In fact, there are more health benefits if you regularly get outdoors than if you stay inside by the fire! Let’s take a look at just a few.

It seems to help with memory

Whether it is the fresh air in your lungs, the beautiful sights you see as you walk, or just your brain making you feel more alert, getting outside seems to help people have better memory retention skills. Now that is really great to know as we all get older!

You enjoy better health

Perhaps this has to do with both keeping physically active and the mental benefits of overcoming depression and stress, but it does seem to make a difference. If people feel better, they seem to live a better quality of life.

the air is better for you

This point is dependant obviously upon the places you frequent. If you walk around a chemical plant, you may not be breathing the same quality of air as you would in the forest. However, I do think most people tend to go somewhere pleasant or peaceful when they get outside with family and friends. And if that is the case, there is very good evidence which suggests that breathing fresh air is better for you than the recirculated, electricity-laden air inside your house.

You are more likely to be fitter and within your weight range

By walking or running on a regular basis you are looking after your heart and your body as a whole. Your internal organs will be working better and there is less strain on your joints. You build up your core muscles and learn to eat better.

It is great for individuals and families

Get outside and you will notice several things start to happen:

  • You find yourself having pleasant thoughts more often and your imagination easily kicks in.
  • Kids get to be challenged by the things they see and find, and their confidence in dealing with problem solving grows. Plus they have a lot of fun doing it.
  • You seem better able to focus on the really important issues in your life.
  • You will have a smile upon your face more often, and
  • Disease and sickness ceases to be such a large focus of your life.

So, what are you waiting for? Get outside today and be active if you can (and it is safe to do so) and organise outings for your family. It won’t be long before this time outdoors becomes a very regular and special time in your life.
