How wonderful is it to just sit back and watch your young children at play?
Oftentimes it is fun, entertaining and a real pleasure to watch. But did you realise that for the kids themselves, play time is not just about having fun, it is also about growth! As they play, they are learning: about themselves, what can and can’t be done, and how to relate to others. There is a clear connection between what they do and the development of their brain, and their play is vital for improved motor skills and the ability to live in a social world.
And that is where safe and properly structured playground areas come into their own. Your children are given an opportunity to play freely and begin to learn the skills they will require as an adult. As they watch, listen and interact with other children they develop language skills, see how to handle disagreements, understand teamwork, problem solve, and learn more about complicated social skills.
Their muscles grow with every swing on the monkey bars and ascent of the climbing frame. Every slide and swing provides opportunities to learn about balance, and how to move and propel themselves through their physical space, while different panels in the playground will improve their hand-eye coordination. Playground equipment also teaches them about their own abilities and prediction of cause and effect.
So next time your child asks to go to the playground, think long and hard before you say no. Just 60 minutes of free play each week could be one of the major activities which assists them to interact well with others and understand their place in the world as adults.
