Our latest image is titled, ‘JUST A CIGAR‘ and is based on the life and work of Austrian neurologist, scholar and psychiatrist Dr Sigmund Freud. He will be remembered for his development of psychoanalysis, believing that people could be helped by discovering their unconscious thoughts and motivation and making them conscious. In our image today, his photograph takes pride of place in the bottom left corner. Much of the remaining is covered with photographs of exploding fireworks, demonstrating his theory of psychic energy, and to give form to his belief in the importance of dream interpretation. We chose to leave his emphasis on sexuality to another image.
The centre photograph of a skull reminds us of Freud’s overwhelming interest in the human mind, the psyche and the ego. As the ego is about a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance, and is unseen by others, we felt the skull, lacking any eyes to see reality better represented this thought. It also reminds us that in his eventual suicide he was alone in his thoughts and pain, invisible to the eyes of others.
Throughout the image are numerous photographs and images (some obvious, others not so), representing his interest in ancient mythology, dreams, and symbols. As much of it has to do with the subconscious we felt it right to leave some more hidden and vague than others. His views on the origin of the universe, on religion, and God as an illusion were well-known and as such, no image could be complete without a Christian cross being included in some form, albeit nearly hidden in the top right corner. Likewise the image reveals brightly lit constellations of stars surrounding his photo.
And of course no image of Freud is complete without the inclusion of his quote referencing his study of symbols with his love of cigars. His reply reminds us that sometimes things are just what they appear to be; no more, no less.
