The 26th of January is the official National Day of our beautiful country Australia.
It marks the day when in 1788 the First Fleet from Great Britain arrived in Port Jackson, New South Wales. Following the American War of Independence in 1783, convicts could no longer be transported to North America and a new location far from England’s shores was sought out. After much deliberation and planning, based largely upon the previous voyages of Captain James Cook, that ‘first’ fleet of 11 ships departed England and arrived on these fair shores eight months later to establish a new experiment in penal colonies.
Since that time Australia, as the continent went on to be called, has grown from a small Indigenous population and an arrival of some 1500 convict and free men and women, to over 24 million people with a destiny and a future of their own making. With a land mass in excess of 7 million square kilometres, it is the world’s sixth largest country and the world’s largest island. It enjoys a population density of just three people per square kilometre (compared to around 35 people in the USA, and 146 people in China).
Australia Day is marked annually with a public holiday to allow Aussies from all backgrounds and beliefs to celebrate with a range of community and family events, including barbeque breakfasts, parades, concerts, and fireworks. Being a sporting nation, we often see a number of sports events planned on the day as well. In Adelaide we are pleased to be hosting the One Day International: Australia V Pakistan cricket match, which is sure to be a crowd favorite.
So, wherever you are in the world today, we hope you might find time to raise a glass of your favourite beverage and join us in a toast to the Great South Land, Australia.
