If you have lived for any time on this planet, you would have either seen or heard of the little green Jedi Master called ‘Yoda‘ who appeared in a number of the StarWars movies. But what does Yoda have to do with fitness? Well, keep reading to find out.
In a classic scene from ‘The Empire Strikes Back‘, Luke’s X-Wing aircraft is about to sink into the swamp. Yoda is encouraging Luke to use ‘The Force’ to raise the craft, and after some arguing Luke says he will try, to which the Master replies sharply:
“No! Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try!“
Yoda knew that Luke could only achieve this herculean task if he believed he really had the power of The Force to do so. And so it is with us: so much of what we need to achieve in life starts with a belief in our mind that we can do such a thing. If you don’t think you can do it, or if you are wavering about whether you will be able to, you will probably fail. It is only when you commit 100% to a task that you begin to see results and overcome any obstacles in your way.
Fitness is no different. Ask any sports champion about their secret to success and most will tell you it came when they truly believed in themselves. Then all the hours of practice falls into place and means something. Whether it is kicking goals, shooting hoops, running 100 metres, throwing a discus or swimming in a relay, none of these champions could have done it with a half-hearted attitude. It took total commitment and a belief that they could do it.
And once you have that belief in yourself, it doesn’t matter if it starts to rain during practice time. It means little if it is dark when you have to get out of bed. And you don’t care if your friends are going out to party when you have to hit the gym. Believe in yourself and commit 100% to achieving it, and you will move mountains.
But do not try. Do or do not. Anything else is a waste of your time. Would you agree?
