Ways to encourage your child to be physically active:
Have you noticed that children today seem to be far less active than we were at their age? Well, keep reading because this is a real concern, and we think all parents today need to be thinking of ways to encourage their child or children to be physically active.
When we were growing up we were ALWAYS outdoors and doing something to keep active. And at school we had PE (physical education) to keep us on the go as well. But now, with all the technology in homes and schools it seems that kids are more inclined to sit hunched over a smartphone or tablet, than kicking a ball around outside.
Like all things though, this is going to come back and bite us on the butt if we don’t turn it around and get our children active once again. Obesity rates are soaring, smoking seems to be back in vogue amongst young people, and large quantities of junk food are being consumed by families every day.
It needs to be turned around, and fast!
We all need to be thinking more about how to promote physical activity in the home, school and community. And it starts when our kids are very young, so we need to be talking to our childcare and kindy teachers to see how they are promoting physical activity in early childhood. Habits develop early, whether they are good or bad, and we need to ensure our teachers are on board with us too.
If you are a parent we would suggest you take a good, hard look at how little exercise your young ones may be getting, and what quality of food they are putting in their stomachs. And maybe you also need to look at yourselves to see what sort of example you are setting for your kids! Do you spend all your time at home on an electronic device and can barely spare the time to go outside with them to play ball? Do they see you stuffing your face with chips, soda and fries, while expecting them to somehow eat a balanced meal?
Perhaps you need to talk to your medical professional to get some ideas on how to start getting your child moving and living a healthier lifestyle. At home you can always make a list of fun things to do that will engage the children and create some great bonding time with the family. And why don’t you turn off the TV and actually show your children something a lot more interesting that will get them out in the fresh air.
Just think of the possibilities if you did this. You could spend time at the park, throw a frisbee, kick a ball, go hiking, have a swim, ride a horse, go camping, ride a bike, paddle a canoe, or even shoot an arrow. The activities are almost endless. It just needs parents to start taking some responsibility for the health and wellbeing of their children, and looking for ways to encourage your child to be physically active.
Before it’s too late.
