It is always a joy to check out an Australian wine producer who has taken on the world successfully. And Hardys have done this with their Black Bottle Brandy. Keep reading for details.
Thomas Hardy & Sons is not only an Aussie producer, they are local South Aussies, so they hold a special place in our heart.
Their unique-tasting brandy is double distilled in a pot still, and aged in oak hogsheads for over two years. Many enjoy its smoothness as an after dinner drink, in a relaxing nightcap, as a long cool drink on an Aussie summer day with coke or lime juice, in a ‘hot toddy’ for a cold, or even in a swish cocktail.
And a brandy with ginger ale and ice is to die for on a hot day!
Whether straight, on the rocks, or with a mixer, we find the Black Bottle doesn’t disappoint, and are always confident of it maintaining its quality time and again.
Packaged in a 700ml bottle, we find it to be smooth and rich, with complex characters of spice and vanilla.
One lady I know swears by this brand, and will only use Black Bottle in her annual Christmas fruit cake!
When it comes to pairing brandy with food however, there seem to be two kinds of ‘brandy with food’ people:
- those who do, and,
- those who wouldn’t dream of it – ever!
For most of us, the thought of ordering a brandy with fish and chips, or steak is just so foreign as to not even be considered.
However, if the opportunity arises, might we encourage you to try it perhaps with a rich dessert, such as ice cream and chocolate mousse, or a strong/aged cheese platter.
You might just be pleasantly surprised.
Let us know what you think, as well as any other brandy and food pairing suggestions you might have.
