If you own or run a business, you may not have given a lot of thought as to why mobile optimization is important for your company website, or why you need a mobile website. Well, if that’s you today, please keep reading because there is much to discuss that could literally save your business.

Having operated a number of small businesses, we recently became concerned over how little attention some businesses were paying to their website.

We went on to write: ‘How and why you need to check your business website for usability‘ in the hope of encouraging business owners to check that their customers could find what they were looking for when purchasing online with them.

And so today, we follow on that conversation by asking whether YOU have a mobile-friendly business website?

But why do I need a mobile-friendly website?

Because the experts agree it is essential that every business with an online presence has a website which is optimized for mobile phone and tablet users.

In simple terms, consider this: How would you feel if over half your customers preferred to shop with you in a certain way, and made it clear to you that if you chose to ignore their preferred way of doing business with you, they would shop elsewhere.

You would do whatever had to be done to ensure you kept the majority of your customers happy, wouldn’t you? Of course you would.

Well, then consider yourself told, because the facts are in, and most online shopping is now done from a smartphone. And the willingness of a business to make their website mobile-friendly, directly affects whether your customers do business with you – or your competitor!

So you can choose to bury your head in the sand and ignore those shoppers, and their preference for using their mobile device with the smaller screen, or you can make the necessary changes.

And whether you do, or you don’t, is of course a personal preference and a business decision only you can make. But we urge you to at least get the facts for your online business and find out what YOUR customers prefer.

It may be that the majority of your customers do in fact still prefer their desktop computer, but times are changing, and you know it won’t be long before that tide turns, and smartphones are all that people use to do their online shopping with.

In fact, it wasn’t that long ago that the majority of our customers preferred using their PC to visit us. But that changed for us, and now the data proves that desktop users now only make up 35% of our customer base. All the other guys come via their smartphone or tablet.

So like everyone, we have to be on top of our game and ensure that our website is optimized for mobile users. And the results?

  • our customers enjoy the experience
  • our goals are being met
  • the search engines are happy with what they find when they visit us, and
  • the numbers of repeat customers is up substantially on this time last year.

How do I check if my website is mobile-friendly?

Just pop over to any number of sites set up to test your website, such as Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test site.

Just type your web address in and wait a few seconds for the results. What you want back is an all-clear like ours below that we just ran when preparing this post.

If the test discovers problems, it will return a page like the image below.

For privacy reasons, we have cropped out the right-hand side of the screen, so as to not embarrass the business we tested.

The good news is that most of these problems can be easily fixed with a little tweaking of the website, use of a different theme, or perhaps a little bit of behind-the-scenes coding or rectification of errors.

At the end of the day, only you as the business owner can make the decision as to whether to go to that trouble and possible expense. But if you care for your business, brand reputation, and future income, we think the time and cost would be well spent.

Do this, and you will then have a responsive website your customers will be happy to spend time on, do business with, and revisit. And Google will love you too.
