Home Maintenance: our 5 step how-to guide
To keep yourself physically healthy you have to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The same rule applies to the environment in which you live, that is your home. Most of us focus more on new décor accessories and on revamping the old stuff with new that we totally forget the principle of maintenance.
To me, if you are fully equipped with the strategies and tools of maintenance you can make your home look evergreen, and regular maintenance is the key to keep your home décor updated. Regular maintenance is an important contributor to the value of your home.
We all spend hefty amounts of money on renovations, but more often than not, rather than maintaining the work, we wait until something is broken before getting it fixed. This is the wrong approach as we should carry out regular maintenance to ensure the quality and smooth working condition of various things and appliances around the home.
Keep reading to find out how to make your house stand out differently by simply keeping pace with the principle of maintenance.
Maintain your exterior and look after your garden:
When it comes to maintenance, you have to give equal maintenance priority to the interior and exterior. The very first strategy of maintenance can simply be a fresh coat of paint. The two biggest enemies that might disrupt the physical outlook of your home are gravity and water.
So carry out inspection rounds weekly, and if not weekly then monthly to identify cracks or chips and get it painted immediately before it spreads. Another easy strategy is to maintain your garden. A well-maintained garden will lift the overall ambiance of your house. Keep all bushes trimmed back at least 12″ to 18″ away from your house and well back from air conditioner units.
Maintain your floor and tiles:
Your second maintenance priority should be your floors and tiles as they are responsible for creating an overall impact on your house décor. The good thing about these maintenance strategies is that they can easily be carried at any time.
There are many great tools available such as tile cutters that will allow you to fix the broken edges of your tiles. Spending long hours in the kitchen makes your kitchen tiles look dirty and greasy, and often serves as a big challenge when cleaning. Mineral oil is the best solution to treat your greasy floors and tiles to give them a neat and tidy look.
Protect your home from termites:
Home maintenance is all about preparing for the worst, and addressing the problems before they become a real threat. Termites are considered as the worst enemy for wooden homes, furniture or statement pieces.
The dilemma is that most of us give termites enough time to cause damage instead of taking measures to prevent an infestation. You can make your life easier by consulting and booking an appointment with a pest professional to spray your home on a regular basis to keep it free from termites.
Cleaning is the key to maintenance:
Deep and effective cleaning is another strategy to maintain your home. It is simple and easy, and is considered the real key to home maintenance. Cleaning regularly will make things easier for you as well as saving you energy, money and time.
Not only will a clean home have a higher value, but it will age better over time. The best strategy is to carry out deep cleaning tasks every weekend by involving everyone present at home to make cleaning a fun activity. Some areas of your home may require seasonal maintenance checks such as chimneys, roofs, fire systems and air conditioning in order to maximize their utility.
Update things according to their functionality:
The other principle to maintenance is updating, not upgrading. This principle applies if you choose to live in the same place for a longer period of time, and where updating appliances will be necessary at some point.
It is recommended that you choose energy-saving appliances that will be light on your budget, and increase the resale value of your home for potential buyers. The same principle applies to the lighting fixtures that can be a good addition to reflect the décor of your house.
Maintain and repair weather stripping: (a bonus point!)
You need to prepare beforehand to deal with changing weather and climatic conditions. Maintaining the weather stripping around your home can save your money as well as energy. However, in some cases, it is advisable to replace them altogether with new ones.
To match the weather stripping for your door, it is recommended that you take a piece of old stripping with you to buy a new one. Many new doors have a feature that enables you to simply slip out the old stripping and slip in the new ones, that then fit neatly into the groove of the door.
